Physical Activity for a Healthier Heart

Last updated 1 year ago

The heart is a muscular organ suited for one of the body’s most difficult jobs— continuously pumping blood throughout the circulatory system. Without the heart, our vital organs, tissues, and brain could not get the nutrients and oxygen they need to function and waste could not be removed from the body.

On average, the heart beats from 60 to 80 times a minute; in well-trained athletes, heart rate can be around 50 beats per minute. Although the heart of an athlete beats slower, it has been trained to pump more efficiently and needs fewer pumps to circulate the same amount of blood. Fortunately, increased cardiac efficiency and improved heart health can still be achieved without training for a marathon. Simply making time for physical activity every day—whether it involves walking, running, or swimming—can make a world of difference in maintaining a healthy heart.

Regular physical activity can improve heart health and overall wellness in the following ways:

  • Improving the heart’s ability to efficiently pump blood throughout the body
  • Improving strength, endurance, and agility
  • Improving energy levels and reducing stress
  • Promoting relaxation and ability to sleep
  • Toning muscles and burning calories, which assist in weight loss and weight management
  • Helping to decrease anxiety and depression

If you suffer from cardiovascular disease, be sure to consult with your primary care physician or cardiac specialist before beginning a new exercise program.
