What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes, a temporary condition which affects five to seven percent of pregnant women, is brought on by certain hormonal changes. During pregnancy, the pancreas sometimes cannot produce enough insulin for the body to properly absorb glucose, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Fortunately, this condition can be controlled through careful attention to diet and exercise, with controlled gestational diabetes having no ill effects on either mother or baby.
